Reverie @ St. Andrew’s Anglican Church

Reverie live at St. Andrews Anglican ChurchOn Friday, I went to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Sidney to see a local band called Reverie, for their EP Release Concert. Reverie features three very talented females (Holly Hurwood, Nicola Hestnes, and Stephanie Benbow), as well as Grant Parkins on the bass guitar. They write all their own music and have a folk-infused sound that incorporates vocals with various instruments including the guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and percussion such as maracas, tambourine, and castanets.

Holly is a good friend and co-worker of mine and I designed the CD cover for Reverie’s EP, You Look So Lovely, the release of which was the main purpose for the concert. I attended mostly to support Holly, but also because I had previously only heard Reverie perform once, in a casual setting, and was very curious to hear them live in a concert setting.

Opening acts consisted of Emily Griffis and Michael Wood, followed by an intermission (including delicious snacks) and then Reverie as the main event. Their performance was incredibly heartfelt, passionate, captivating, and very enjoyable, and even involved some audience participation for certain songs. The intricate design of the church provided wonderful acoustics that allowed the magnificent harmonies and melodies to shine even brighter.

New Job at Hot House Marketing

On Monday, I started a new job at Hot House Marketing as a Junior Web Developer. I am currently working there part-time for a couple of hours a day while I finish my course on Drupal Open Source Development & E-Commerce. I assist the current Web Developer with tasks such as updating current client websites and starting new web projects, as well as a variety of other things such as html emails, image editing for web, etc.

ctn_lgoHot House Marketing is a full-service advertising agency located in Victoria, BC. It is a fairly small company but has huge potential. They have a team of nine employees (including myself) that work together as a team to provide services such as websites, print advertising, video, brand building, marketing, SEO, business consulting, fundraising, research, event planning, among others.

I am really enjoying this job so far and think that this company is a good fit for my skills and personality, because I am the type of person who thrives in a small community with a team mentality. Hot House Marketing is made up of people who are very talented and have a multitude of skills in this field, and I am delighted to have been offered a position working amongst these people. It is a rare opportunity that allows me to begin my career as a web developer, especially in a job market where entry-level positions in most fields are hard to come by because one generally needs years of experience to get almost any position.


Flipside @ Felicita’s Pub

Flipside live at Felicita'sLast night, I was lucky enough to witness the very first gig for Flipside, a 7-piece band that covers video game music. One of my coworkers is in the band, he plays the trombone. The other members play percussion, guitar, bass, trumpet, saxophone, and piano, but are also very versatile and switch instruments in the middle of songs to play maracas, create a beat on the music stand, or jam on bongo drums (not to mention a bit of perfectly harmonized a-capella). They played some of my favourite classic hits, such as “Butter Building” from Kirby’s Adventure, “Bob-omb Battlefield” from Super Mario 64, and “Pirate Ship” from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, among many others.

The band performed at Felicita’s, a pub on the campus of the University of Victoria which is well-known for giving opportunities to local bands or musicians who are just starting out or aren’t too well-known quite yet. Flipside performed for a full house, and was well-received by everyone listening. This event was the perfect combination of some of my favourite things: video games, music, and supporting local artists/people I know, and on top of all that, it was free! I would definitely go and listen to them again in the future, and it seems like that will be a reality because they were so popular that Felicita’s requested them to perform again on a busy Friday night.

Dr. Sketchy’s + Camosun Visual Arts Fundraiser

Last night, I attended an event at the Fort Cafe that was a fusion of Dr. Sketchy’s (a social gathering that takes life-drawing outside the studio and places it in a more casual, coffee-shop/cafe atmosphere with drinks and the general public) as well as a fundraiser for the Camosun Visual Arts graduating class of 2013. They planned it in order to raise money for their Grad Art show at the end of the year, and being that I just graduated from that program in April, I wanted to come and support them because I know exactly how stressful it is at this time of year, trying to fund-raise while being constantly bombarded with huge projects in many different mediums that all happen to be due the same week.

Now normally, Dr. Sketchy’s features a professional model. However, since this particular event was planned by the 2nd-year VisArts students, they acted as the models instead, and they did a great job. They also had an art sale going on at the same time, featuring traditional black & white film photography, lino-block prints, and some beautiful ceramic vessels creating using the Raku technique.

The turnout was great, and the event also featured an amazing acoustic performance by a band called Aivia at the end of the night. The lead singer, Liam, is a current 2nd-year in the program, and the bassist, Tom, graduated in my year.

All in all, I think the event was a huge success, raking in quite a few dollars for the students, as well as the Fort Cafe itself which has been trying to stay open so it can continue to provide opportunities for fringe and amateur artists and performers, as well as offering delicious, unique food and community events.
